What is a cochlear Implant?

Cochlear Implant is a small complex device that improves the hearing ability of individuals who are profoundly deaf or those who find it very difficult to hear. A cochlear implant bypasses the part of the ear that is damaged to send the voice, unlike hearing aids which amplify the sound. A cochlear implant consists of an external piece consisting of a microphone, sound processor and transmitter that are placed behind the ear and an internal piece consisting of electrodes that are accommodated within the ear.

Cochlear implants can be performed for a wide range of age groups, from infants to elderly individuals. The candidacy for cochlear implants depends on various factors such as the degree of hearing loss, the individual's overall health, communication needs, and expectations. While infants may receive cochlear implants as young as 12 months old in some cases, older adults can also undergo the procedure if they meet the criteria for candidacy.

Some ENT problems cannot be prevented as these are caused because of genetics or other medical conditions. But most ENT problems can be prevented if the immune system is boosted and hygiene is maintained.
